Young and old treated to reception, concert

School celebrates generations with Grandparents Day, tales of then and now

Students at Prairie Park School had special guests in class on Friday.

About 200 grandparents visited their grandchildren’s classes as part of the school’s first Grandparents Day.

The turnout pleased Prairie Park PTA members, who sponsored the event.

“It was a huge success,” PTA member Monica Rethman said. “We had only about 60 grandparents pre-register.”

Teachers planned an activity for the students and grandparents to allow them to share stories about their school experiences.

Many grandparents ate lunch with their grandchildren, and they were also treated to a cookie-and-punch reception in the afternoon and a concert by the school’s orchestra.

Grandparents Day will likely become a fixture at Prairie Park School.

“We’ll probably have them annually,” Rethman said.
