Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 1, 1906: “The roads in Douglas County just now are about the most eloquent sermon that can be preached on the need of good roads. Mud has been hub deep in many places for a week or longer and much needs to be done to help farmers get to and from town. : It appears enough settlement will be made that there will be no costly coal strike, which could have hit hard here. : Arrangements have been made for people wishing to attend the Metropolitan Opera in Kansas City April 12 to get tickets here. Many seem inclined to go. : The first of the Rhodes Scholars will graduate from Oxford this summer. When a few scores of them have been out in the world, it will be possible to determine just how wise the late Cecil Rhodes was in providing all that money for all those scholarships.”
