Heading out to a high school homecoming celebration today?

“Grab the sunglasses on the way out,” says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “It’s a good day for a parade.”

This morning’s temperatures were starting out a little cool. “On your way out this morning, grab a jacket,” Schack said.

At 8:30 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 50 degrees, with east-southeast winds at 6 mph and a humidity of 77 percent. This morning’s low was 47 degrees.

When the homecoming parades begin at 2:30 p.m. today for Lawrence High School and Free State High School, temperatures should be about 71 degrees, Schack said. And winds should be fairly light from the south, about 5 to 10 mph, she said.

The Free State parade will begin just south of Bob Billings Parkway and Wakarusa Drive and proceed north on Wakarusa to the school. The LHS parade will begin at 11th and Massachusetts streets and head south on Massachusetts to 19th Street, where it will turn west to the LHS parking lot.

Schack said the temperature will climb to a high of 75 degrees today by late afternoon. The average high for this date is 77 degrees.

Schack said the temperatures should remain fairly pleasant tonight, falling off into the upper 60s by the time the Free State football game begins at 7 p.m. at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium and the LHS game begins at 7:30 p.m. at Haskell Stadium.

The temperature will continue to fall overnight to a low of 54 degrees by early Saturday morning.

Saturday’s high temperature will climb to 76 degrees, with south winds 8 to 12 mph, Schack said.

Schack said a disturbance moving in from the south will bring a chance for showers and thunderstorms late Saturday and early Sunday. The National Weather Service puts the chance at 40 percent for Saturday, 60 percent for Saturday night and 40 percent for Sunday before 1 p.m.

Sunday’s morning low will be 62 degrees the high will be 84, with partly cloudy skies.
