Lawrencian arrested during demonstration

At least one Lawrence resident was among the 370 protesters arrested Monday during an anti-Iraq war demonstration outside the White House.

Lauren Sullivan said she was carried by police to a bus where demonstrators were put aboard and then taken to a police station holding cell. She said she and other demonstrators with her spent about five hours in jail before being released.

“They were nice,” Sullivan said of the police. “They loosened our handcuffs and gave us Kentucky Fried Chicken and biscuits.”

Sullivan traveled to Washington last week to take part in the anti-war march and rally. Last month, she was with Cindy Sheehan and other protesters who had gathered near President Bush’s ranch outside Crawford, Texas.

Monday demonstrators sat down on the pedestrian walkway in front of the White House after a request for a meeting with Bush was rejected. Most were cited for demonstrating without a permit.
