Cobras use offensive pressure to take 5-1 win over Dragons

Logan McKinney is an all-around soccer player who can play attacker and goalie with success. McKinney led the 8U Cobras to a 5-1 victory over the Dragons on Saturday at Youth Sports Inc. with three goals.

“I thought I would score goals when I came to the game this morning,” McKinney said.

McKinney also played one quarter of goalie to combine with Conor Hiatt, Wynn Feddema and Lane Nations to allow just one goal.

Cobras head coach Scott McKinney wasn’t surprised by Logan McKinney’s offensive output or the great play out of his four goalies.

“Last week we took lots of shots on goal because we had people practicing being a goalie,” Coach McKinney said.

The game started off with the Dragons putting high pressure on the Cobras defense. Dragons forward Sadra Gerami took multiple shots on goal in the first quarter. Gerami’s aim was a little off. Two of her shots were deflected away by the goal post and three other shots missing just wide of the goal. Katie Oury, Dragons goalkeeper during the first quarter, smothered every ball that rolled into the goal box.

The Dragons were unable to capitalize on their early offensive pressure, and the tide turned in favor of the Cobras during the second quarter.

The Cobras netted four goals during the second quarter with McKinney scoring all three of his goals in this frame. Cobras midfielder Lane Nations put away the lone goal not scored by McKinney.

Dragons defenseman Noah Yoshida helped jumpstart the offense by clearing every ball near the defensive line during the second quarter.

The Dragons tried to initiate a comeback during the third quarter. Gerami scored his team’s lone goal of the game, making the score at the start of the fourth quarter 4-1 in favor of the Cobras.

A late addition to the Cobras added an extra punch during the final quarter of the game. Forward Aric Trent arrived late to the game, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t effective. Trent came into the game early in the fourth quarter and scored a goal minutes after checking in.

Cobra Wynn Feddema, left, challenges Dragon Sadra Gerami during their match-up Saturday at Youth Sports Inc. The Cobras won, 5-1.

Dragons head coach Shannon Oury said her team had a few things to work on before their next game, but overall she was pleased with the game.

“We’re going to work on shooting the ball at the goal,” Oury said. “We also need to improve our goal kicks and defensive clears, but I was very happy with today’s game because our kids had a lot of fun.”

The Dragons aren’t the only ones trying to improve for next week. Even with the 5-1 Cobras win, McKinney said adjustments could still be made. “I think we’ll brush up on throw-ins and the angle of attack on a throw-in,” McKinney said looking ahead to the game next week.
