Bulldogs hold Chops scoreless, 15-0 win

Tyler Johnson, quarterback for the second- and third-grade Bulldogs, was a one-man show against the Chops on Sunday at Youth Sports Inc.

Johnson helped the Bulldogs beat the Chops 15-0.

Bulldogs head coach Bill Schneider wasn’t surprised by Johnson’s performance.

“Tyler’s always been really good at running the ball, and that’s one of the reasons he was our pick for quarterback,” Schneider said. “He’s been very consistent throughout our first three games.”

Johnson scored both of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns and totaled more than 150 yards of rushing. His first touchdown run was a 65-yard quarterback keeper to the right side. The Bulldog offensive line blocked well up front and left a huge hole for Johnson to run through. After a successful extra-point run, the Bulldogs led 7-0.

The Chops were unable to get any offense going, and the ball was back in the hands of the Bulldogs’ offense.

Johnson scored his second touchdown on a similar running play with the direction of the run reversed. He broke through a gap in the defensive line and cut to his left. Johnson then sidestepped past two

Chops players and took off for the end zone. Five Chops defenders tried pursuing Johnson, but they couldn’t keep up with his speed. Johnson even had the time to turn back and look at the Chops players who were chasing him as he sprinted 60 yards for the touchdown.

A failed extra point try left the score at 13-0 headed into half time.

Sloppy play on both offensive sides of the ball marred the second half. Neither team could sustain a drive, and they traded three-and-outs until the last drive of the game.

The second half showed Schneider what areas need improvement.

“We still need to work on our offense, especially our run blocking,” Schneider said. “But I don’t think we had a single player that didn’t play good and hard on defense.”

On the last drive of the game, Schneider’s defense managed to score some points for the Bulldogs. The Bulldog defensive line pushed through the Chops and sacked the quarterback in the end zone for a two-point safety.

The line of scrimmage was crucial for the running game of the Bulldogs and Chops on Sunday at Youth Sports Inc.

Johnson made two big plays on offense, and the defense secured the 15-0 win for the Bulldogs.

“I was happy when I scored my two touchdowns, but I was really happy when we won the game,” Johnson said.

With the win the Bulldogs pull back to the top of the toy-bowl standings for the second- and third-grade division, jumping over the Hurricanes who had the week off last week. The Chops are still looking for their first win of the season.
