Cash, checks, money orders taken from court

Lawrence Police said Wednesday that an unknown amount of cash, checks and money orders were stolen Tuesday morning from Municipal Court, 1006 N.H.

The items were discovered missing from a safe shortly before 8 a.m. when an employee arrived, said Sgt. Dan Ward, a police spokesman.

Ward also said police had responded to an alarm at the building about 6:30 p.m. Monday – the night before the burglary was discovered – but that the officer who arrived at the scene four minutes after the alarm found the building was secure.

There were no signs of forced entry. But Ward said he would not comment about additional facts of the investigation or whether there were any suspects.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police and City Manager Mike Wildgen had acknowledged on Tuesday that there was a burglary at the court building but had not previously said what was taken.
