Station No. 4 open house set for today

Area residents today will have a chance to tour Fire Station No. 4 and tell city leaders what the building should be used for once it is replaced by a newer west Lawrence fire station next year.

City officials will host an open house from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the station, 2819 Stonebarn Terrace. City Manager Mike Wildgen said the meeting was meant to spur neighbors to begin thinking about how the building should be used in the future. Wildgen said the city didn’t yet have specific plans.

“What we have specifically said is any future use will be compatible with the neighborhood,” Wildgen said. “It won’t be a retail use or anything like that.”

The fire department will move out next summer when a new station in the 2100 block of Wakarusa Drive is expected to open.

City officials will have a similar meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 28 to discuss the future of the fire station at 1839 Mass. That station will no longer be needed when Fire Station No. 5 is completed next year near 19th and Iowa streets.
