Compost giveaway set for next month

Gardeners, clean out your pickup trucks. Lawrence’s annual compost giveaway is set for Oct. 13-15.

“I’m guessing it’ll be gone in two days. We’ll see,” said Diana Sjogren, who oversees the city’s yard-waste recycling efforts.

While supplies last, the giveaway will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the city’s composting facility at 1420 E. 11th St.

Officials canceled giveaways in 2003 and 2004 after detecting potentially harmful levels of Clopyralid, a broadleaf herbicide often used on lawns.

This year’s crop, Sjogren said, is safe.

“There’s still some Clopyralid, but it’s at or below 10 parts per billion,” she said. Clopyralid degrades over time.

Most of what remained of the 2004 crop was given away earlier this year. The compost is made from more than 9,000 tons of leaves and grass clippings collected throughout the spring, summer and fall.

City crews will be selling mulch – $5 per pickup truck – from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6-8 at the composting facility.
