Chops and Gorillas take game to wire

Conklin puts on one-man show, helps Gorillas pull out 14-8 win

For all of you fifth- and sixth-grade fantasy draft owners out there, hopefully you picked up Chops running back/linebacker Reece Conklin.

Conklin did it all – coming up with an interception, recovering a fumble and adding a touchdown run – in the Chops’ 14-8 win over a feisty Gorillas team on Sunday at Youth Sports Inc.

Gorilla linebacker and quarterback, Cameron Solko, set the tone early with a bone-crushing hit on the opening drive. Both defenses showed off their speed and intensity, holding one another scoreless during the duration of the first half.

After making a couple of adjustments at halftime, both teams’ offenses exploded out of the gate.

Chops quarterback Derby Miller began the frenzy when he capped off a long possession with a 10-yard scamper for a touchdown.

Not to be outdone, Solko came right back with his Gorilla offense, making use of both his running and passing skills. Gorilla running back Blake Bergmann punished Chop defenders with strong runs up the middle.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Chops were expecting another Bergmann run. However, the Gorillas had a trick up their sleeve, calling a risky play call.

After several Chops defenders bit on a dirty play fake, Solko scrambled outside of the pocket and found a darting Christopher Rousch. Rousch hauled in the pass and ran 15 yards for the Gorilla touchdown.

The defense stood strong for the Gorillas on the ensuing possession.

With the Chops deep in Gorilla territory, defensive lineman Ben Dreith pounced on the bouncing football, the result of a mishandled Chops hand-off.

While the Gorillas used an aerial assault, the Chops resorted to a strong running performance from Miller and running backs Teddy Sumner and Conklin. The Chops’ large offensive line eventually wore down the Gorillas’ defensive front for large gains that also took up large chunks of precious time.

Then with the game tied at 7-7, Conklin asserted himself on both sides of the ball.

Conklin snatched the ball away from a Gorilla receiver, cut left to the opposite side of the field blazing past several Gorillas before being pushed out of bounds after a 15-yard interception return.

The Chops, make that Conklin, capitalized on the offensive opportunity.

The Chops had the clock on their side and grinded away, picking up at least five yards a. Then with 7:27 left in the fourth quarter, Conklin followed a host of blockers and burst past the Gorilla defense for an exciting, and game-sealing, 60-yard touchdown sprint.

The Chops break through a team banner as friends and family cheer them on before the start of their game against the Gorillas on Sunday at Youth Sports Inc.

And as if his previous offensive/defensive exploits weren’t enough, Conklin recovered a fumble on the ensuing kick-off to all but close things out for the Gorillas

Clinging to one last hope though, Solko aired out a ball to his receivers, but Chops safety Adam Rea came up with the game-ending interception.

Chops head coach Jim Whitchurch said he was ecstatic about the victory, but said his team could improve on a couple things.

“We need to work on containing the sweep. A lot of teams like the Gorillas are good at running to the outside,” Whitchurch said. “We have good inside control, but we really need to work on containing and then trying to keep ourselves poised.”
