Addison assists Club Select in 2-1 win over Topeka Select Jazz

Addison Campbell may not get credit for scoring goals, but she sure plays a huge part in setting them up. Campbell, 10U KVSA Club Select winger, gets up and down the field like an Olympic track star.

Campbell’s efforts on Saturday lifted Club Select past the Topeka Select Jazz, 2-1, at Youth Sports Inc. fields.

Club Select head coach Gretchen Yencic said she was proud of how her team played.

“I thought they did great,” Yencic said. “They really pulled together well, especially with just having had one practice.”

The lack of practice didn’t show at all during the game for Club Select. Crisp passes created numerous scoring opportunities, which highlighted the game.

The first half started with fast-paced action from both teams.

Danielle Campbell, Club Select attacker, played well in the fast-paced game. Campbell slipped through a seam in the Jazz defense and placed a ball on the ground to the right of the keeper and into the net for the first goal of the game.

Club Select’s offensive pressure created many scoring chances for their offense, but it left them vulnerable to fast-breaks by the Jazz offense.

Early in the second half, the Jazz capitalized on a fast break. Jackie Martinek, Jazz forward, broke away from the Club Select defenders to tie the game at 1-1.

Club Select dominated the time of possession in the second half but couldn’t put the ball into the goal. The team used its possessions to take a lot of shots, with most of them deflecting wide. This gave Club Select numerous goal-scoring chances off corner kicks.

Select forward Jenna Giele sprints ahead on a breakaway in Saturday's game versus Topeka Select at Youth Sports Inc.

Hanna Heline, Club Select midfielder, used fancy footwork to weave in and out of defenders and finally score the game-winning goal with a few minutes remaining in the contest.

Yencic said her game plan wouldn’t change much for Club Select’s next game.

“We’re just changing out the goalies,” Yencic said. “Other than that, the girls all liked the positions they played, and I think they moved and played well together.”
