Will Ferrell has happy memories of school days, start in movies

We recently interviewed former “Saturday Night Live” comic actor Will Ferrell, who now stars in movies. Here are some things he told us about himself:

Q: What was your favorite movie to act in?

A: They have all been fun for different reasons. I loved “Anchorman.” That was special because I wrote it with my friend Adam (McKay), and he also directed it. It felt like summer movie camp, and we couldn’t believe they would let us make a movie.

Q: What is the funniest thing that has happened to you at an audition?

A: Well, it wasn’t funny at the time but I was auditioning for a summer theater program, and I had to do some Shakespeare and I forgot half of the lines. So I started making it up, and luckily the teacher just said, “Very good.”

Q: Were you a class clown in school?

A: A little bit. I got good grades so the teacher let me get away with stuff. I was also very conscientious. I would fool around to a point, and then the teacher would give me a look and I would stop.

Q: Who is your favorite actor to work with?

A: I loved working with Nicole Kidman in “Bewitched.” I liked working with Robert Duvall, and I liked working with Coach (Mike) Ditka. He was really surprisingly good for a guy who has never done a movie before.

Will Ferrell is shown from a scene in his latest film, Bewitched, which was released this summer. Ferrell got his first big break on Saturday

Q: Do you still have your “Elf” costume and your Spartan cheerleading sweater from “Saturday Night Live”?

A: No. They don’t let you keep that stuff. I don’t know if I wanted to keep the “Elf” costume; it would be a little too hot to walk around in. When you make a movie they hold onto the wardrobe. In the past they would give it to the actors, but they realized they didn’t have anything for the archives. So they started keeping that stuff.

Q: Did you ever think you would achieve such great success?

A: No. I was just happy if I could just make money and survive. Then I got on “Saturday Night Live,” and that was my first real job and then I got to do movies. It has been beyond my wildest dreams.

Q: What is the best advice anyone gave you about acting?

A: It was my father. He said just to realize there is a lot of luck involved. He didn’t mean it in a mean way. He said if it was just based on talent you wouldn’t have anything to worry about because you have all the talent in the world. Just know there is luck and give it your best shot.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not acting?

A: Well, we have a baby, Magnus. We have three dogs and make sure they don’t tackle the baby. We like to take trips. My wife is Swedish. She was born here, but she has relatives back there and we go every summer.
