Sweet sweep

KU opens Big 12 with rout of A&M

When the latest Division One volleyball coaches’ poll was released Monday, five Big 12 Conference teams were ranked in the top 25.

When next week’s poll is released, a sixth team almost certainly will be added to the list.

In front of a large and energetic crowd Wednesday night at Horejsi Center, the Jayhawks made a strong case for a top-25 appearance when they swept 15th-ranked Texas A&M, 3-0, in their Big 12 opener.

“What a great performance,” KU coach Ray Bechard said after the 30-26, 30-27, 30-19 victory. “They are a ranked team and a quality conference opponent, and I can’t think of a better way to start off conference play.”

Kansas (9-1) received 17 points in this week’s poll. The victory was KU’s second straight sweep of a top-15 A&M team. Last season, the Jayhawks swept the then-No. 13 Aggies in College Station, Texas.

Kansas University's Josi Lima records a kill over Texas A&M's Christi Hahn (14) in the second game of the Jayhawks' sweep. KU won Wednesday at Horejsi Center.

Do the Jayhawks have the Aggies’ number?

“I would like to think that we do,” Bechard said. “We have had some success against them the last three years here. Ranked or unranked, our team seems to pay attention when A&M comes in here.”

Kansas dominated Wednesday, as evidenced by the stats. KU had 52 kills to only 19 errors. The Jayhawks’ attack percentage (31) more than doubled the Aggies’ 14 percent. A&M had only 15 more kills than errors (39-24) on the night.

Senior Josi Lima once again led the Jayhawks with a team-high 19 kills, including a kill in game two that she drilled into the face of A&M setter Kari Kelley.

The spike nailed Kelley in the right cheek, giving the Jayhawks a 28-27 lead. Lima also added 11 digs, which ranked second on the team to junior Jamie Mathewson, who had 12.

Lima said the Jayhawks’ preparation was the key.

“They were a very good team, but we were prepared for them,” Lima said. “We scouted them since (Monday), so we were very well prepared.”

In game two, the Jayhawks were cruising along with a 21-11 lead before a 13-3 run by Texas A&M tied the game at 24. After Bechard called a time out, the Jayhawks finished with a 6-3 run, highlighted by Lima’s powerful kill.

Kansas University's Jamie Mathewson, left, and Josi Lima celebrate a point against Texas A&M in the final game of the Jayhawks' sweep. KU upended the Aggies on Wednesday at Horejsi Center.

“I was a little upset that we let them get back in the game,” Bechard said. “But we showed a tremendous amount of character once they tied it up, to be able to come back and finish.”

In that game two, Kansas had an attack percentage of only 8 percent, yet still was able to find a way to win it.

“I am not sure how we won that game, to be honest,” Bechard said. “You dig a little bit more than they do, and you pass a little bit better, but that’s what good teams do. When the stats aren’t always in your favor, you still find a way to win games.”

In the lopsided third game, Kansas won 30-19 with the help of Texas A&M’s 0-percent attack rate – a combined nine kills with nine errors. Kansas closed the match on a 8-2 run.

Were the Jayhawks surprised by the easy victory?

“Yes and no,” said sophomore Emily Brown, who had 10 kills. “Yes, because of all of the hype that surrounded A&M and them being No. 15 in the country, but no because we’re going to be a solid team this year. It was a great way to start off Big 12 play.”
