Woodland claims first career title

Kansas University junior Gary Woodland fired a final-round 69 Tuesday to win the Cleveland State Invitational at Sand Ridge Golf Club.

Woodland finished with rounds of 67, 66 and 69 for a three-day total of 202, good for a three-shot margin of victory over runner-up Ben Kern of Kansas State. It’s the first tournament title of Woodland’s collegiate career.

“I am very happy for Gary,” KU coach Ross Randall said. “He beat a really good field and shot such a solid score on a great golf course.”

KU finished ninth in the 17-team field with a score of 887, four strokes behind Big 12 Conference rival Kansas State. Texas Tech also represented the Big 12, finishing 12th.

Louisville won the event with a score of 871, nipping TCU by a stroke.

KU will return to action Monday, the opening day of the two-day Kansas Invitational at Alvamar Golf Course.

Costner third in Colorado

Fort Collins, Colo. – KU junior Amanda Costner shot a 69 Tuesday to take third place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic at the Ptarmigan Country Club.

Costner’s three-day total of 212 left her two shots behind co-medalists Sian Reddick and Josefin Svenninsson, both from Big 12 rival Baylor, who each shot 210 while leading the Bears to a 15-shot victory in the team race.

The Jayhawks finished sixth with a team score of 894, three shots ahead of Nebraska. Colorado rounded out the Big 12 participants in the 18-team field with a 10th-place finish.

“I am very happy with the way we battled back today,” said KU coach Erin O’Neil. “Amanda went out and played three great rounds of golf and was very steady for us.”

KU will return to action Oct. 3-4 at the Battle at the Lake in Tulsa, Okla.
