Bench sparks victory for Darth Griffens

Jack Clark remains cool and calm under pressure in his soccer games. He can finish plays with ease, even with multiple defenders around him.

Clark scored the first two goals of the season Saturday to help the 10U Darth Griffens beat the Eagles, 4-0, at Youth Sports Inc. fields.

The game started with solid passing from both teams resulting in nothing more than corner kicks and goal kicks. Neither team had a clear open shot at the goal until Clark suddenly took the ball, turned quickly and ripped a shot into the back of the net.

After the Darth Griffens’ first goal, both teams struggled to build up a consistent offensive attack. The defensive efforts of Jake Keary, Chasko Rocha and Brianna Adams of the Eagles kept the score at 1-0.

Good defense wasn’t enough to stop Clark though, as he struck a hard liner over the goalie’s head and into the left side netting for his second goal of the game.

Eagle Isaac March didn’t let the 2-0 deficit slow his effort. March charged hard on every 50-50 ball and aggressively attacked balls in the open field. March had an excellent chance to put the Eagles on the board in the second half, but Darth Griffens goalie Carl Olson blocked the shot to preserve the shutout.

Darth Griffens player Ian Hieri, left, kicks the ball as Eagles player Caleb Ledbetter runs to defend the kick Saturday at Youth Sports Inc.

Sam Clark added a third goal for the Darth Griffens in the second half by taking a rebounded shot and kicking it into the goal. Vinnie Barker then capped off the scoring for the Darth Griffens with the fourth and final goal of the game.

Kalim Dowdell added a spark off the Darth Griffens bench to keep the intensity high after substitutions.

Annie Hierl and Olson combined to record the shutout as goalies for the Darth Griffens.

Both teams return to the field next Saturday.
