10U Funky Monkeys edge Diamonds

Taryn Dreed scored two goals and added an assist, but it wasn’t enough as the Funky Monkey’s 10U girl’s soccer team defeated the Diamonds 6-3 Saturday at Youth Sports Inc. fields.

Kathryn Amick opened the scoring for the Funky Monkeys after collecting on a nifty give-and-go off the foot of Abby Schletzbaum. Amick caught her defender watching the ball and snuck her way behind the Diamond defense for an open goal.

Along with her pretty pass, Schletzbaum floated around the Diamonds goal, hoping to pick up any deflections off of Diamond goalie Andrea Stewart. Stewart was able to stuff Schletzbaum on a point-blank shot, but Schletzbaum benefitted from a friendly deflection a little later and tallied another score for the Funky Monkeys.

Not to be outdone, Dreed found a streaking Noel Foster along the sideline and Foster cashed in for the Diamonds”first goal.

It was quite evident that both the Diamonds and Funky Monkeys’ coaching paid off as play was very structured.

Katie Graham of the Diamonds played lock-down defense, saving a goal and stripping the ball from several Funky Monkeys willing to test her. Not even a ball to the face slowed Graham’s tenacious defense.

Corrie McLean advances the ball for the Funky Monkeys in Saturday's contest against the Diamonds at Youth Sports Inc.

But despite the solid play turned in by the Diamonds, the Funky Monkeys’ pesky offense was overwhelming. Corris McLean stuffed a beautiful one-timer just off the hands of a diving Stewart.

Funky Monkeys’ Hannah McCauley and Skylar Evans helped secure the three-goal victory as they controlled the offensive zone with solid passing and fresh legs, raising havoc for a depleted Diamond defense, short on substitutes.
