Lobos outlast Mizzou

? Missouri’s defensive game plan centered on stopping one player. It turned out to be the wrong guy.

Hank Baskett caught 10 passes for 209 yards and a career-best three touchdowns, helping New Mexico pull away in the fourth quarter for a 45-35 victory Saturday.

“Baskett, we didn’t think that he was that great,” Missouri defensive end Xzavie Jackson said. “That’s a great player.”

Baskett’s career game overshadowed that of teammate DonTrell Moore, who had 94 yards on 20 carries and threw for a touchdown on the option. Moore had been the player the Tigers (1-1) wanted to control.

“Baskett’s a great player, the only problem is he plays for us and nobody in the country knows,” coach Rocky Long said. “But he’ll be a top draft choice, and he’s as good as any wide receiver in the Big 12.”

Kenny Byrd’s 40-yard field goal snapped a fourth-quarter tie, and Baskett’s nine-yard touchdown catch from Kole McKamey with 2:01 clinched it for the Lobos (2-0), who scored 17 points in the final quarter and won for the second time this week after beating UNLV on Monday. They spoiled Missouri’s home opener despite a record-breaking day from Brad Smith.

New Mexico's Gabriel Fulbright (23) runs after intercepting a pass from Missouri's Brad Smith. MU's Arnold Britt is at right. The Lobos beat the Tigers, 45-35, Saturday in Columbia, Mo.

“Obviously, it’s a very serious loss,” MU coach Gary Pinkel said. “What you do is you try to correct mistakes and I think there’s a lot of things we can do.”

Kansas State 21, Marshall 19

Huntington, W.Va. – Allen Webb threw two touchdown passes, and Thomas Clayton scored twice for Kansas State (2-0), which preserved its victory with an interception in the closing seconds.

Marshall had the chance to win with a field goal from the Kansas State 21 with nine seconds left but decided to try one more play. But Jimmy Skinner, playing the second half in relief of injured Bernie Morris, threw an interception to end the threat.

Nebraska 31, Wake Forest 3

Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska returned two interceptions for touchdowns and a fumble for another.

Cory Ross rushed for 123 yards to highlight a mostly flat offensive performance by the Cornhuskers (2-0).

The Demon Deacons (0-2) committed four turnovers and converted only three of 16 third downs.

Baylor 48, Samford 14

Waco, Texas – Shawn Bell threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns, and Jamaal Harper returned a fumble 29 yards for a score for Baylor, which is off to its first 2-0 start since 2001.

A week after breaking a 24-game road losing streak by beating SMU, Baylor had its highest-scoring first half in three years, building a 24-7 halftime lead in the home opener against the Division I-AA Bulldogs (1-1).
