A group of protesters visited Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway's office Friday to demand he ban military recruiters on campus.

The 15 or so demonstrators said KU’s anti-discrimination policy barred the military from campus because of the military’s ban on openly homosexual enlistees.

Hemenway was away, but protesters left a petition signed by about 300 people and a list of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq.

Schools including Harvard Law School and Yale University have banned recruiters from campus because of the Pentagon’s stance on gays. But under a disputed 1996 law known as the Solomon Amendment, schools could lose federal funding if they don’t let recruiters on campus.

During its upcoming term, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide if that law is constitutional.
