Rape trial ends with acquittal

A jury this week found a 20-year-old Lawrence man not guilty of raping his former junior-high girlfriend.

The jury delivered its verdict Tuesday after a weeklong trial in Douglas County District Court.

The defendant, a former Johnson County Community College student, also was found not guilty of possession with intent to sell marijuana and possession of amphetamine. He was found guilty of two misdemeanors: possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The alleged victim, 19 at the time, told police the man raped her in his car in October after giving her a ride home from The Hawk, 1340 Ohio.

But at trial, defense attorney John Frydman argued the woman didn’t get out of the car when she had opportunities and that her perception of what happened was altered by alcohol in conjunction with a prescription drug. Also, Frydman said the woman’s version of events changed and that a week went by before she reported the incident to police.

The Journal-World generally does not name suspects in sex crimes unless they are convicted.
