Olive the Above offers hands-on art

Interested in learning a new art technique?

Been dying to try your hand at resist hand dyeing?

Want to learn how to print your own cards, CD covers or posters?

If the answer is “yes” to one, two or even all of the above questions, you might want to head down to Olive Gallery and Art Supply.

The quirky art shop with lime green walls located at 15 E. Eighth St. is now offering a hands-on approach to art. Enrollment is in progress for classes that will start Sept. 19.

Olive the Above Art Academy is located above the main store. The new studio will offer space for both traditional art disciplines and lesser-known techniques.

Classes focus on painting, drawing and textile work, including everything from portrait drawing and acrylic painting to card weaving. In case you were wondering, card weaving is the art of creating hand-loomed items using easily assembled tools.

Lessons will be taught by Kansas University graduates Adam Tompkins and Holly O’Ruth. Tompkins has a degree in painting, O’Ruth in textiles. Also teaching classes is the proprietor of Olive Gallery, Jill Kleinhans.

“This is an artsy town,” Kleinhans says. “I think it will appeal to a lot of folks.”

Most classes run for four or eight weeks, depending on the time commitment customers prefer.

Prices per class range from $35 for a four-week course in acrylic painting to $110 for an eight-week course in screen printing.

Prices do not include supply kits, which are about $50 for most classes and can be purchased at a 20 percent discount if ordered during enrollment. In general, students will receive a 10 percent discount on all art supplies.
