BMW on Wednesday joined a group consisting of General Motors and DaimlerChrysler to develop a new dual-mode hybrid powertrain system for its automobiles.

The partners also are in discussions with other automakers to join the group that will compete with Toyota and Honda, the leading hybrid makers. Hybrids help conserve fuel by using an electric motor to take some of the load off the gasoline engine.
