Blasting regulations to be considered

Agenda highlights ¢ 6:35 p.m. Tuesday ¢ City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets

Bottom line

City commissioners will consider a new set of regulations to cover blasting activities related to new construction – such as removing rock for roads and sewer lines – in the city.

Background

The new regulations will require blasters to provide more notice to nearby property owners, hold more informational meetings about proposed blasting and bring in an outside expert to review any blasting plans. The issue came up after residents complained about some blasting activity in the Fox Chase South Development in western Lawrence. Some members of the construction industry have said the new regulations will add unnecessary costs to future projects.
