A storm front was creeping eerily into the area this morning, its growls of thunder putting a cool, wet and gloomy cast on Halloween morning.

“You might notice a few lightning bolts in the southern skies,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We do a have a chance for some phantom showers at midday,” she said. “By the afternoon, the clouds should break up. . . . By the evening, it looks pretty good for trick-or-treaters.”

At 8 a.m., Lawrence was getting some light showers, the temperature was 53 degrees, the humidity was 80 percent and winds were from the north-northwest at 9 mph. Most of the storm system was to the south and west of Lawrence, Schack said.

Today’s high will climb to 59 degrees, with winds from the north at 10 to 15 mph. Schack recommended taking a jacket during Halloween evening activities. The city is encouraging trick-or-treating between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

“Overnight, the temperature drops off to a bone-chilling 36 degrees,” Schack said.

Tuesday’s high will be 68 degrees, with mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 42 degrees, with the high climbing to 74 degrees and mostly sunny skies.
