Green ‘competed’

Chiefs QB plays despite father's death

? Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green said there was no doubt he would play against the Chargers on Sunday, three days after his father died.

Green said he spoke with his family about playing, “and there was no hesitation on anyone’s part, because that’s what he would have wanted,” Green said after the Chiefs lost, 28-20.

Green’s father, Jim, 58, died Thursday of an undisclosed cause.

“He supported me and had been to every game when he could,” Green said. “I know he loved football. He would have wanted me to play. I thought about him all day. It made it difficult waking up knowing he wasn’t going to be ready watching the game.”

Green completed 31 of 43 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns, with four sacks.

“Obviously he came in with some very serious distractions,” coach Dick Vermeil said. “But I thought he focused and really, really competed.”

Green’s teammates were impressed with his composure.

“He played with a huge burden on his back and wanted to be here and help his team win in any way possible,” fullback Tony Richardson said. “Trent is an incredible man and I think he did the best he could under the circumstances. You would not have known anything was bothering him. He was still fiery, still wanting to win the ballgame. We just wanted to rally behind him.”
