Winless foe worries Wildcats

? Southern Oregon University’s football team is 0-for-’05 and riding a 10-game losing streak.

But try to convince Baker University coach Mike Grossner that SOU is that bad.

“Their record is so deceiving,” Grossner said. “We’re walking into a buzzsaw.”

Baker’s football team has flown halfway across the country to meet the Raiders in their homecoming game today. Kickoff will be at 8 p.m. (Central time) on the SOU campus.

Southern Oregon, an NAIA independent, plays mostly NCAA Div. II schools and even one NCAA Div. I-AA school (University of San Diego), while Baker plays strictly an NAIA slate within the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

Baker has won only two of eight games, but three of the ‘Cats’ losses have been to teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25, including No. 6 MidAmerica Nazarene, in overtime.

Statistically, Baker is at the bottom of the HAAC in most defensive stats and in turnover margin, but the ‘Cats lead the league in passing.

Sophomore quarterback Kendall Bradley leads BU with 1,306 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, but senior backup Brian Sheppard has thrown for 660 yards and seven TDs.

Sheppard came off the bench to lead Baker to a 27-24 come-from-behind victory over Avila on Saturday after Bradley had thrown two interceptions that went for touchdowns.

“I think Kendall will probably start.” Grossner said. “But I have confidence in both of them.”

Baker’s last home game will be next Saturday against Culver-Stockton. The ‘Cats will close on the road against Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo.
