Chattanooga suspends seven players for violations

? Seven Chattanooga football players were suspended for what the chancellor describes as curfew violations.

The violations coincided with a pre-dawn Oct. 21 gang rape complaint by a female student.

“They were there, and they were suspended for being there,” lawyer Jerry Summers, who is representing some of the football players, told the Associated Press.

He said Friday the players had been interviewed by police, and “we believe there is a completely different version of what happened.” He said the sex was consensual and “much more limited” than alleged.

Athletic director Steve Sloan and Mocs coach Rodney Allison did not return telephone messages Friday.

The school identified the players as Muhammad Ahmad Abdus-Salaam, Anthony Broadnax, Lironnie Davis, DeJuan Payne, Cori Stukes, Terrence Thomas and Larry White.

Allison told the Chattanooga Times Free Press on Thursday the seven players, three of them starters, would not travel to today’s game at Appalachian State.

University police chief Mack McNeely declined Friday to say if the player suspensions were related to the rape complaint. He said the woman had changed her account of what happened since the initial incident report.

McNeely gave the AP and the newspaper a copy of the report that obscures portions that appear to contain names, some places and other information. McNeely said the university was trying to protect students’ privacy.

The newspaper has filed a freedom of information request for deleted sections that were not names.
