Car chase ends with two arrests

Two people were arrested Tuesday night by Lawrence Police following a car chase that ended in rural Douglas County.

Officers used spikes to flatten the car’s tires and bring it to a stop in the 900 section of East 1900 Road, about nine miles southeast of Lawrence.

Robert Maxwell, 40, Leavenworth, and Malissa Brooks, 19, Edgerton, attempted to run from the disabled car but were caught by police and taken to the Douglas County Jail, according to jail records.

An officer attempted to stop the car in East Lawrence about 10:30 p.m. when a check on the car’s license tag indicated the car might have been stolen in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Maxwell was charged with fleeing from a law enforcement officer, obstructing the legal process and theft. Brooks was charged with obstructing the legal process and theft, and also had an outstanding legal warrant. Wednesday morning Brooks was released on a $3,000 bond and Maxwell was released on a $4,500 bond, according to jail records.
