Tonight’s games
Eudora (8-0 overall, 2-0 district) at Baldwin (7-1, 2-0)
Last week’s results: Eudora beat Spring Hill, 46-20; Baldwin beat Santa Fe Trail, 27-8
Last year’s meeting: Baldwin won, 14-6
Quick hits: As if this heated rivalry needed any extra motivation, plenty is on the line for both squads in tonight’s showdown at Liston Stadium. For starters, the winner finishes unbeaten in district play and will open at home Tuesday in the Class 4A state playoffs. Eudora also has the opportunity to close out a perfect run in the Frontier League. Both teams have a wealth of playmakers on offense. The outcome should be decided by which team answers the challenge on defense.
De Soto (4-4, 0-2) at Bonner Springs (2-6, 0-2)
Last week’s results: De Soto lost to Tonganoxie, 30-22; Bonner Springs lost to Perry-Lecompton, 49-22
Last year’s meeting: De Soto won, 43-3
Quick hits: For De Soto, tonight’s contest caps a disappointing final four weeks of a 2005 season in which the Wildcats opened with big expectations before fading from the Class 4A playoff picture. Still, De Soto has the opportunity to close out above .500 with a victory against Bonner Springs, which also is playing out the string after opening districts with consecutive losses.
Atchison Maur Hill (2-6, 0-2) at McLouth (8-0, 2-0)
Last week’s results: Maur Hill lost to Leavenworth Immaculata, 33-24; McLouth beat Pleasant Ridge, 18-10
Last year’s meeting: Maur Hill won, 27-25
Quick hits: McLouth proved it merits mention with the Class 3A heavyweights after last week’s victory over fellow unbeaten Pleasant Ridge. With a state playoff berth already secured, the Bulldogs must avoid the dreaded letdown against a Maur Hill sqaud that has nothing to play for but pride after being eliminated from the playoffs last week.
Oskaloosa (2-6, 0-2) at Silver Lake (8-0, 2-0)
Last week’s results: Oskaloosa lost to Pomona, 50-29; Silver Lake beat Osage City, 48-0
Last year’s meeting: Silver Lake won, 57-0
Quick hits: Oskaloosa is one of the few area teams that knows going into tonight’s game that a playoff berth is out of the question. However, the Bears will look to take another step in their turnaround against an unbeaten Silver Lake team that could face an emotional letdown after wrapping up a state berth last week.
Spring Hill (2-6, 0-2) at Santa Fe Trail (2-6, 0-2)
Last week’s results: Spring Hill lost to Eudora, 46-20; Santa Fe Trail lost to Baldwin, 27-8
Last year’s meeting: Santa Fe Trail won, 18-17
Quick hits: Two 0-2 district teams battle for a victory to close out the regular season. Inconsistency on offense has plagued the Chargers all season, who need to be on an upswing tonight against a Spring Hill squad that has had some scoring success the last two weeks.
Wellsville (5-3, 2-0) at Central Heights (5-3, 1-1)
Last week’s results: Wellsville beat Jayhawk-Linn, 39-3; Burlington beat Central Heights, 41-20
Last year’s meeting: Wellsville won, 35-8
Quick hits: Mathematics appear to be in Wellsville’s favor no matter the outcome of tonight’s contest in Richmond. With a victory, the Eagles take the top spot in the district and clinch a home game Tuesday in the Class 3A state playoffs. Should Wellsville lose, its 2-1 district mark is likely to hold up, even should a three-way tiebreaker – which is still a possibility – come into play.
Friday’s games
Mill Valley (2-6, 0-2) at Shawnee Heights (2-6, 1-1)
Last week’s results: Mill Valley lost to Olathe North, 55-7; Shawnee Heights beat Olathe Northwest, 7-0
Last year’s meeting: Mill Valley won, 39-17
Quick hits: Mill Valley knows it won’t be part of this year’s Class 5A playoff field. However, the Jaguars have a chance to play spoiler against Shawnee Heights, which surprised Olathe Northwest last week.
Ottawa (3-5, 1-1) at Paola (7-1, 1-1)
Last week’s results: Ottawa lost to Pittsburg, 48-22; Paola beat Gardner-Edgerton, 53-6
Last year’s meeting: Paola won, 17-3
Quick hits: Ottawa faces a cut-and-dried scenario tonight. Win, and the Cyclones are in the Class 5A playoffs – no easy task on the road against a Paola team whose only loss came two weeks ago against perennial power Pittsburg in its district opener. Lose, and Ottawa has no chance of rising above third place in this power-packed quartet.
Veritas Christian (5-2) at Hamilton
Last week’s results: Veritas Christian lost to St. Marys Academy, 56-22;
Last year’s meeting: Did not play
Quick hits: After back-to-back losses, Veritas Christian looks to get back on track in a game added to the Eagles’ schedule as a replacement for the canceled contest against Tyro Christian late last month. A key for Veritas Christian will be cleaning up the turnovers and miscues on point-after attempts that have plagued the Eagles the last two weeks.
