Frosty temperature scrapes away old record low

Lawrence had the coldest temperature in Kansas this morning, with the low dropping to below 30 — creating frosty conditions for the first time this fall. Temperatures will climb into the upper 50s by this afternoon.

“Do expect to scrape your car,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “You want to bundle up on your way out.”

At 7:45 a.m., the temperature was 29 degrees, which was a record low for this date. The old record low was 30 set in 1925, Schack said. The humidity was 92 percent and winds were from the northwest at 5 mph, making the wind chill 24 degrees. Schack said Lawrence was under a freeze warning through 9 a.m.

“We haven’t been this cold since last spring,” Schack said. The last time Lawrence was this chilly was 174 days ago, on May 3, when a record low of 26 degrees was reported at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

“It looks like we go from frosty to mid 50s by this afternoon,” Schack said. Today’s high will be 57 degrees by late afternoon, she said. Clear skies are expected through the evening.

Overnight, Lawrence’s temperature will fall to 33 degrees by early Wednesday morning, with patchy frost. Wednesday’s high temperature will be 61 degrees, with clear skies and south winds 5 to 10 mph, Schack said.

Thursday’s morning low will be 35 degrees, with the high reaching 62 under partly cloudy skies.

“Sunny skies last though Friday,” she said.
