KU makes quick work of Tigers

Early goals lift Jayhawks to 2-1 soccer victory

A fast start and relentless offense carried Kansas University to a 2-1 nonconference soccer victory over Colorado College on Friday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

The Jayhawks outshot the Tigers, 24-9.

“I thought we played OK in spells during the game. We finished our chances early on very well,” KU coach Mark Francis said, “but I think we probably should have had a couple of others.”

Both of KU’s goals came within the first 12 minutes, and KU stifled the Tigers until the 39th minute.

“I felt that we had a lot of good movement, more so than we’ve had the past couple of games, and I think that’s really going to help us throughout the rest of the season,” said Michelle Rasmussen, who scored the first KU goal off an assist from Caroline Smith. “We need to keep our forwards moving, and we can find them easier.”

Kansas University's Missy Geha, right, fights for a possession with a Colorado College player in the Jayhawks' 2-1 victory. KU won the nonconference game Friday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Although the Jayhawks relinquished just one goal, Francis said he was not pleased with his team’s defense.

“I thought defensively, in the first half, we were a little bit unorganized. And I thought in the second half we kind of did a little bit better with that,” he said.

KU had to schedule the nonconference game because Texas, its opponent Sunday, does not have a traveling partner.

“Texas was the lone ranger this year,” Francis said, “so you have to schedule a game. Obviously, it wouldn’t be fair for us not to play today, and then Texas play Missouri, and us play Texas on Sunday.

“Colorado College is an independent team. They’re not in a conference. So it makes it easy to schedule them, because they don’t have a conference schedule.”

Francis said he was glad to see improvement on offense because of the upcoming game against the Longhorns.

KU's Caroline Smith fights for the ball against Colorado College's Molly Uyenshi in the first half.

“They are very solid in the back, so it’s going to be important — actually this week, we worked a lot on the offensive side of our game, the movement up front, those kinds of things,” Francis said. “I thought we had a really good week of practice, and I thought today there was some of those things and those ideas that we were able to do.

“So going into Sunday’s game, we need to continue to keep building on that.”

KU improved to 9-6-2.

“It’s always good to get a win. It helps our confidence,” said Kimberly Karfonta, who scored KU’s second goal. “We feel like we’re really prepared and have been doing good things and looking forward to Texas.”
