Kansas duo inspires American Eagle

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. is planning a new chain of stores to appeal to 25- to 40-year-olds.

The new chain will be called Martin + Osa, and it is named for a Kansas couple who were photographers and naturalists in the early 20th century, the company announced Thursday.

The name of the chain is meant to “evoke the spirit of Martin and Osa Johnson, two enterprising Kansans who were married and chose a life of discovery long before it was fashionable,” said Ken Johnson, president of the new concept stores, which will feature casual clothes, denim and active sportswear.

Warrendale, Pa.-based American Eagle operates more than 800 stores under the American Eagle name targeting teens and young adults. It has a store in downtown Lawrence and a distribution center in Ottawa.
