Dad accused of killing infant appears in court

Attorney Mark Manna was appointed to defend a Lawrence father accused of killing his 5-month-old daughter.

Jay Decker, 26, who is charged with first-degree murder, made a brief appearance before a Douglas County District Court judge Thursday.

Decker burst into tears when relatives walked into the courtroom.

Several people wore pins with a picture of 5-month-old Risha Lafferty, who was found dead last Friday at Edgewood Homes, 1600 Haskell Ave., while under her father’s care.

The cause of death has not been released, but police said she died of “traumatic injuries.”

The judge ordered Decker to appear with his attorney at 2 p.m. Thursday. He remains in the Douglas County Jail on $250,000 bond.
