Brisk fall day ahead

Grab a jacket and something warm to drink on your way out the door today — temperatures in the upper 50s and mostly cloudy skies are making for a cool, brisk day.

“We’ll have below-average temperatures,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. “The wind chill has been holding around the 45-degree mark.”

At 8:15 a.m., the temperature was 50 degrees, with an 83 percent humidity.

“Northwest winds at 7 mph are making it feel like the mid 40s,” Reith said. Clouds are expected to move out briefly this afternoon, bringing in some sunshine and helping the temperature rise to 60 today, which is cooler than normal, he said.

“We should be at 68 for the average high,” Reith said.

More clouds will arrive later this afternoon, bringing brisk conditions for tonight’s crosstown football battle between Lawrence and Free State high schools. (See pre-game story.)

Temperatures at the 7 p.m. kickoff at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium will be in the mid 50s, with a northerly wind between 8 and 10 mph making the wind chill in the upper 40s, Reith said.

“It won’t be too cold,” Reith said.

Kansas University football fans who were on the road today to get to Saturday’s game against Colorado in Boulder might run into a few showers out in western Kansas, Reith said.

At Saturday’s 6 p.m. kickoff in Boulder, the temperature will be in the mid 40s and upper 30s, he said. (Latest stories.)

In Lawrence, temperatures will start Saturday morning with a low of 41 and a high of 58 degrees.

There will be a chance for afternoon sprinkles on Saturday, followed by a surge of arctic air that will plungs south out of Canada, Reith said.

“The clouds clear out and our temperatures just drop like a rock,” he said.

Sunday’s morning low will be 37 degrees, with the high climbing to only 51 degrees Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service says that the first hard freeze for the fall is possible on Monday morning, with temperatures falling to a low of 30 degrees, creating frost throughout north-central Kansas.
