Robinson leads Cougars to big victory

Perhaps football fans at Youth Sports Inc. saw the second coming of Michael Vick Sunday, when the fourth- and fifth-grade Cougars officially unveiled Steffan Robinson as their starting quarterback.

After spending the past season as his team’s featured tailback, the Cougars gave the multidimensional player the reins to the offense, and Robinson responded by leading the Cougars to a 27-0 win over the Cardinals.

“He has the ability to throw the ball 40 yards. A lot of the kids didn’t think he could throw, but we needed to use our passing offense and he can air it out for us,” Cougars coach Tim Nelson said.

Robinson’s speed and agility caused fits for the Cardinal defense all afternoon, and gave Cougars coaches the luxury of mixing up their offensive play calling.

Robinson displayed his raw athleticism early in the first quarter, when he left a group of would-be Cardinal defenders in his wake for a 30-yard touchdown run off a broken play.

But to avoid the stigma of a one-dimensional running quarterback, the lefty displayed a laser of an arm late in the game, when he completed five-consecutive passes.

Robinson wasn’t the only Cougar rolling on offense either.

A running back committee of Dante Tucker, William Thompson and Jordan Brown kept the Cardinals even more on their heels when Robinson wasn’t working.

Tucker received a majority of the handoffs and broke off several large ground gains against a depleted Cardinals defense that featured only 14 players.

Thompson opened the second half with a counter run for a 35-yard touchdown, giving the Cougars the necessary momentum to pull away for good.

Cougars running back Jordan Brown sprints into the end zone for six points against the Cardinals on Sunday at Youth Sports Inc.

Brown added an exclamation point on a 15-yard score that saw him dance around tacklers behind the offensive line before he blasted through an opening for the touchdown.

The Cougars carried over their stellar offensive play to the defensive side, using their size, especially on the defensive line, to stop any notion of a Cardinals comeback.

“The defense played exceptional this afternoon,” Cougar defensive coach Will Reed said. “This team is really coming together and at the right time with the playoffs nearing.

Levie Reeves led the way, anchoring himself in the middle of the line to stuff the run and force the Cardinals to try and find another source of offense.

“I’m really pleased with the way the defense played today. They did an excellent job of swarming the ball,” Cougars defensive coordinator Craig Rogers said.
