Rain moving in tonight

If you’ve been itching to try out a new fall umbrella, you won’t have long to wait. A cold front moved in about 4:30 a.m., which will bring cloudy skies later today and wet weather tonight, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We do see scattered storms for the evening,” Schack said.

At 7:30 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 59 degrees, the humidity was 72 percent and the wind was from the north at 3 mph.

“It’s actually a beautiful start out there,” Schack said. “But things are changing.”

Today’s high will climb to 71 degrees, with increasing clouds throughout the day, she said. Winds from the north will gust around 20 mph.

“You might need a jacket out there for the afternoon,” she said.

Scattered showers are expected to move in this evening, followed by heavy rains overnight, she said. The heavy rains will start about 10:30 p.m. and will be fairly widespread throughout the area. She said there could be some localized flooding.

Schack said there is also the chance for severe weather tonight just to the south of the Lawrence area.

The National Weather Service says there’s a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms after 2 p.m., with an 80 percent chance of precipitation tonight and a 70 percent chance of heavy rain on Thursday before 1 p.m.

Thursday’s morning low will be 50 degrees, with Thursday’s high reaching 55 degrees.

Friday’s morning low will be 42 degrees, with the high reaching 59 degrees. Skies will be partly cloudy.
