Area football capsules

Kickoff for all games is 7 p.m.

Baldwin (5-1) at Spring Hill (1-5)

Last week’s results: Baldwin beat Prairie View, 41-14; Spring Hill beat Gardner-Edgerton, 36-15

Last year’s meeting: Baldwin won, 20-6

Quick hits: Baldwin opens Class 4A district play on the road, which shouldn’t be much cause for concern – the Bulldogs are 4-0 away from home this fall. However, Baldwin must beware of an emotional Spring Hill squad coming off its first victory of the season.

Perry-Lecompton (6-0) at De Soto (4-2)

Last week’s results: Perry-Lecompton beat Kansas City Piper, 38-0; De Soto lost to Eudora, 39-24

Last year’s meeting: De Soto won, 28-0

Quick hits: The best area first-round district matchup will determine which school gets an early leg up in the battle to secure a Class 4A state playoff berth. Perry-Lecompton has played well on both sides of the ball all season, while De Soto must rebound from last week’s lopsided setback.

Eudora (6-0) at Santa Fe Trail (2-4)

Last week’s results: Eudora beat De Soto, 39-24; Santa Fe Trail beat Mill Valley, 34-23

Last year’s meeting: Eudora won, 49-13

Quick hits: While a perfect record indicates Eudora has played well all season, the Cardinals have especially found their stride the last two weeks in convincing victories over two solid Frontier League teams. They’ll open Class 4A district play against a Santa Fe Trail squad that hopes last week’s win over Class 5A Mill Valley will be a good jumping-off point for the next stage of the season.

McLouth (6-0) at Leavenworth Immaculata (0-6)

Last week’s results: McLouth beat Troy, 26-6; Immaculata lost to Lansing, 32-7

Last year’s meeting: Immaculata won, 39-6

Quick hits: Nobody in the Delaware Valley League has solved McLouth on either side of the ball so far this season. It should be more of the same for the Bulldogs in the first round of Class 3A district play against an Immaculata squad that’s been on the wrong side of numerous blowouts this fall.

Olathe Northwest (3-3) at Mill Valley (2-4)

Last week’s results: Olathe Northwest beat Free State, 36-35; Mill Valley lost to Santa Fe Trail, 34-23

Last year’s meeting: Olathe Northwest won, 22-20

Quick hits: This Class 5A district opener is a classic case of two teams headed in opposite directions. Olathe Northwest is feeling good about itself after holding off Free State last week, while Mill Valley is in the midst of a three-game losing streak.

Osage City (1-5) at Oskaloosa (2-4)

Last week’s results: Osage City lost to Mission Valley, 42-7; Oskaloosa beat Wathena, 35-13

Last year’s meeting: Osage City won, 50-14

Quick hits: Oskaloosa is looking to end an 11-game district streak, and may have found the perfect opponent in its Class 3A opener. While the Bears will attempt to ride the momentum created last week by their best performance of the season, Osage City is coming off a lopsided setback.

Gardner-Edgerton (2-4) at Ottawa (2-4)

Last week’s results: Gardner-Edgerton won, 20-7

Last year’s meeting: Gardner-Edgerton lost to Spring Hill, 36-15; Ottawa lost to Chanute, 42-6

Quick hits: Ottawa isn’t peaking at this crucial juncture of the season, carrying a four-game losing streak into district play. The bright spot for the Cyclones is opening Class 5A district play against a Gardner-Edgerton that may be in the emotional dumps after allowing Spring Hill to win its first game of the season last week.

Bonner Springs (2-4) at Tonganoxie (5-1)

Last week’s results: Bonner Springs lost to Kansas City Ward, 33-8; Tonganoxie beat Basehor-Linwood, 24-3

Last year’s meeting: Tonganoxie won, 49-16

Quick hits: Tonganoxie drew the long straw in this loaded Class 4A district, opening up against a .sub-.500 ballclub while Perry-Lecompton and De Soto do battle in tonight’s other contest. The Chieftains have rediscovered their running game after a slow start, and will look to exploit a Bonner Springs team that’s struggled with consistency on both sides of the ball.

Wichita Word of Life (2-4) at Veritas Christian (5-0)

Last week’s results: Word of Life lost to St. Marys Academy; Veritas Christian beat Springfield (Mo.) Christian, 32-20

Last year’s meeting: Veritas Christian won, 60-52

Quick hits: While the rest of the area prepares for district play, Veritas will simply continue its pursuit of a playoff berth in the Kansas Christian Athletic Assn. Last year’s contest proved to be a shootout when these two eight-man teams met in the wide-open confines of the larger 11-man gridiron. Veritas has still proven to be explosive on the smaller field, but must a find a way to slow down Word of Life’s experienced corps of skill players.

Burlington (5-1) at Wellsville (3-3)

Last week’s results: Burlington beat Fredonia, 39-8; Wellsville lost to Osawatomie, 14-6

Last year’s meeting: Wellsville won, 21-6

Quick hits: Wellsville has shown itself to be arguably the area’s most enigmatic team – raising its game against strong opponents while struggling against teams that, on paper, it should beat. The Eagles will look for more of the former against a Burlington team that carries a solid showing through the first six weeks into tonight’s game.
