New panda getting his teeth

? The National Zoo’s giant panda cub had another medical examination Wednesday morning, which showed that he now has teeth.

The cub weighs 12.7 pounds and measures 25.5 inches from nose to tail, according to zoo spokeswoman Peper Long.

Long said all four canine teeth and all 12 incisors have erupted through the male panda’s gums, although not all of them are fully grown in. Keepers and veterinarians had been able to feel the teeth erupting for about a week. Unlike many human babies who cry when they are teething, the cub does not appear to be uncomfortable, she said.

The name of the cub, born to female Mei Xiang on July 9, will be announced during a ceremony Monday. The name was chosen in an online poll sponsored by Friends of the National Zoo from among five options approved by Chinese officials. In China, cubs are not named until they are 100 days old to ensure that they are not named until their survival is assured.
