Grim reminder

There will be little sympathy for anyone found guilty of intentionally setting Friday’s deadly apartment fire.

October 12, 2005

Amid all of the floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters that have struck around the world in recent weeks, the arrest of a Lawrence man Tuesday in connection with a local fire that killed three people is a reminder of the deadly havoc humans also can wreak.

No details were available Tuesday about why or how Friday's fire at Boardwalk Apartments might have been started, but evidence in the case apparently was sufficient to lead to the arrest of a 20-year-old Lawrence man on one count of aggravated arson and three counts of first-degree murder.

What would motivate such an action is beyond the imagination of most people, but if it is found that this deadly fire was intentionally set, there isn't likely to be any sympathy for the perpetrator. Fire and law enforcement officials deserve congratulations for a relatively quick arrest in the case. Every effort should be made to ensure that the person or persons responsible for this tragedy are brought to justice.

No sympathy for the perpetraitor???? Are you kidding??? In this town?? There will be hoards of Social workers scrambling off the hill to tell the world it is not his fault. He was abandoned as a child, no parental guidance, He fell through the cracks, It is the fault of our society. I cannot deny there is much truth in this potential defense. It is unfortunate this kid, (if he is guilty)may have suffered, however, he is not alone and the greater majority of folks who were raised without parents, or with parents who were dysfunctional don't set fires and murder other people. Clearly who ever did this act, has issues. Issues beyond the uneccessary burning and killing of innocent people. Did the system fail? Yes, what system is it that failed? The family? Yes! The social welfare system? Absolutely. The same folks who will stand and defend this person, (after the fact) will be the same one's who will beat their drums in his defense. The social welfare system is top heavey and concerns itself with staying in business rather than truely affecting the people it is designed to serve. Too bad, this kid did fall through the cracks, but! The folks he killed did nothing to deserve his twisted retribution for his issues.
