Compost giveaway set for this week
Area gardeners will have the chance to pick up free compost at a city event this week.
The city’s Solid Waste Division will sponsor its fall compost giveaway from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the city’s Wood Recovery and Composting Facility, 1420 E. 11th Street.
The compost is recommended as a way to improve lawn and garden soils. The compost is made from the weekly collection of residential yard trimmings that are collected by city crews each week. The city previously had suspended the compost giveaway program because the material had high levels of a common herbicide that could cause damage to plants and flowers.
