Veritas volleyball team goes 1-2 at home quadrangular

Veritas Christian’s volleyball squad was saddled with two losses Monday at a quad at the East Lawrence Rec Center.

The Eagles (11-3) lost to Grandview (Mo.) Christian 17-25, 18-15, then bounced back to beat K.C. Midland Adventist, 25-23, 25-20, before losing their final match to Topeka Cair Paravel, 21-25, 21-25.

Veritas coach Kyle Billings said the Eagles had hoped to fare better in the quad, especially against Cair Paravel, which was the only team to have beaten Veritas before Monday.

“We played the two toughest teams we’ve played all year,” he said. “We did real well, but (Cair Paravel) just had us.”

Billings cited Adi Willems and Kristie Tiegreen for solid play. Willems had eight aces, 23 assists, 14 kills and four digs, and Tiegreen added nine assists, four blocks and 28 kills.

Veritas will play host to a tournament Saturday at Kansas University’s Robinson Gym. Billings said it would help the Eagles prepare for the upcoming state tournament.

“There will be a lot of good teams there, so that will push us,” he said.
