Twosome doubles up

Johnson, Thompson snare pair of titles

Martin Johnson and Lisa Thompson dominated the doubles matches of the Douglas County Closed Tennis Tournament over the weekend at the Lawrence Tennis Center.

Johnson and Thompson teamed to take the mixed-doubles crown, but not before Thompson won in the women’s doubles on Saturday and Johnson won the men’s doubles just before the mixed finals Sunday.

“I felt like we played pretty strong,” Thompson said about the 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the mixed finals. “Our net game was pretty good, and I think that helped us. And serving-wise, we did pretty good, too.”

Thompson was familiar with her opponent in the mixed doubles, as she went up against her teammate, Kalissa McAtee, from the women’s doubles.

Thompson and McAtee pulled out a 10-9 super-tiebreaker to beat Kay Pettit and Mary Dillon on Saturday afternoon.

“Kalissa and I have played together a long time, and so we know how we move on the court,” Thompson said about the performance in the women’s doubles. “Again, I think we had a good, strong net game. And that’s what you’ve got to have in doubles.”

In Johnson’s first match Sunday in the men’s doubles, he teamed up with Terry Fry to knock off Dick Wedel and John McGrew in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

The two were able to rebound late in the second set after Wedel and McGrew got off to a quick start.

“I just relied on my partner to pick me up. He (took) over at the net, and we get it back and get more determined, I guess, when we get down,” Johnson said.

Fry said they had to start lobbing more because of the aggressive play of Wedel at the net.

“It really came down to who owned the net. We were trying to get in a position where we could own the net, put more shots away that came down,” Fry said. “Once we took the net, we could get more points that way.”

Martin Johnson returns a groundstroke during the Douglas County Closed Tennis Tournament. Johnson and partner Terry Fry won the men's doubles title Sunday at the Lawrence Tennis Center.

The men’s 3.5 singles and men’s open singles finals also were played Sunday.

Zach Juarez defeated Todd Trembly, 6-2, 6-3, to claim the 3.5 singles title, while Steve Martin took down Tommy S. Johnson, 6-3, 6-2, in open singles.

“I got lucky,” Martin said. “I got up a break on him in the first set. I think I started messing with him a little bit. In the second set, he broke a string. I think I got into his head a little more and got through it.”

In Saturday’s women’s open singles final, Pettit beat Jennifer Gartner, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

“We had to compete with the KU-K-State game for this year. But it worked out very well,” tournament director Bud Pettit said. “This is a favorite time for a lot of us. We’re all friends, we play each other all year long in our city leagues, play together on weekends, then we have tournaments and play together again, so really it’s a neat little social thing.”
