Passing game pays off for Veritas Christian

Casey Woods may not have looked like a quarterback with No. 76 on his jersey, but the Veritas Christian quarterback sure threw like one.

Woods tossed four touchdown passes – two to tight end Mark Randtke – propelling Veritas Christian to a 32-20 triumph over Springfield (Mo.) Christian in eight-man football Saturday afternoon at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.

“There were a couple of passes I’d like to have back,” said Woods, whose regular No. 13 jersey was torn in the second quarter and the only replacement number available was 76, “so I guess maybe I’d give myself a B-plus.”

Give the same grade to Eagles’ pass protection.

“I only got sacked once, so the line did a good job,” Woods said.

Moreover, Woods did not throw an interception while completing 10 of 18 passes for 145 yards and the four TDs.

“Casey has a great arm,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said, “and he’s a heady quarterback.”

Now if Bennett could just figure out what happened to his running attack. The Eagles won their first four games by unleashing the potent ground duo of Jesse Schultz and Marcus Holman.

Schultz was a workhorse Saturday with 25 carries for 125 yards, including a 28-yarder for the Eagles’ first and only rushing touchdown.

That was also Schultz’s longest rush.

Meanwhile, sophomore speedster Holman, who had scampered for 11 rushing TDs in the first four games, was shut down. Holman managed just nine yards on seven carries, although he did catch a 73-yard TD pass from Woods late in the third quarter.

Holman was averaging 17.3 yards per carry, but the Knights never gave him any wiggle room. Not that it was Holman’s fault, according to Bennett.

“We didn’t open holes inside or outside today,” Bennett said. “We didn’t control the line of scrimmage, and I thought we would.”

In retrospect, though, Bennett said: “Maybe we should have passed more today and spread them out.”

Veritas and the Missouri school were knotted at 14 after the Knights scored with just 1:05 before the break. Yet Veritas made the most of the 65 remaining seconds. In fact, it took the Eagles only 45 seconds to score and post a 20-14 halftime lead.

Zach Hertzel’s 31-yard run – the Eagles’ longest rush of the night – carried to the Knights’ 17 and, on the next play, Woods connected with Ben Reynolds in the end zone with :20 showing on the clock.

Woods hurled TD passes to Randtke and Holman in the third quarter to elevate the Veritas lead to 32-14 and basically put it out of reach.

On defense, the Eagles recovered a pair of fumbles and Schultz contributed an interception.

Twice in the early going, Springfield Christian was inside the Eagles’ 10-yard line and failed to score.

“The defense has done a good job of keeping us in games,” Bennett said, “and they did it again today.”

Veritas, 5-0, will play host to Wichita Word of Life at 7 p.m. Friday at YSI.
