Motivational ploy pays off for Seahawks

In an attempt to motivate his struggling team, Seabury Academy boys soccer coach Gunar Harmon shaved his head last week.

With a convincing 4-1 victory Friday against Kansas City Schlagle at the Youth Sports Inc. fields, it appears the ploy may have worked.

"It was an answer to the metaphor, 'I'm pulling my hair out watching them play,''' Harmon said. "We have started to play really well this past week, and I think it's safe to say that I can let my hair grow out now."

It appeared it might be a long night for Seabury when Schlagle (0-8) scored just 45 seconds into the game. That was its only goal of the game, however, and Seabury took off from that point and dominated.

Only a few minutes after Schlagle's goal, Seabury's Robert Halloran streaked down the left side and let a shot go with his left leg. The ball flew over the leaping Schlagle goalkeeper and under the crossbar to tie the game at 1.

"It was a split-second shot," Halloran said. "Coach always tells me that I'm left-footed, so I took that one with my left foot, and luckily it went in. I can kick left-footed and right-footed, but I am a lot more comfortable right-footed."

Seabury (4-6-2) could have added to its lead, but missed multiple wide-open opportunities in front of the net. Only three minutes after Halloran's goal, Philip Anderson broke in on a breakaway, but shot it wide.

Then Max Cannon, who had just entered the game as a sub, had an even bigger breakaway, but rifled a shot high over the crossbar.

"I lament the chances that we missed, because we will have games coming up where we will need those to go in," Harmon said. "We may only get one or two of those next week, unlike the 10 that we had tonight, so we will need to take advantage of them next time."

Seabury scored with only 16 seconds left in the first half to take a 2-1 lead when Shin Jae Lee knocked in a rebound.

The Seahawks added two more goals in the second half.
