Temperatures heading into high 80s

If you love warm, summery weather, you can get outside and soak it up today.

“I don’t think we’re going to make it into the 90s today, but definitely heading back into the 80s,” says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “It’s kind of sticky out there.”

Today’s morning’s low of 72 degrees appears to have set a new record for this date for the warmest low temperature, Schack said. The old record was 69 degrees set in 1954. The average low temperature for today is 54 degrees and the average high is 75 degrees.

At 8:15 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 73 degrees, the humidity was 84 percent and winds were from the south at 8 mph. Skies were clear of any clouds.

“We should see them return about the noon hour and last through the afternoon,” Schack said. “Breezy winds out of the south will keep the cold front to the north of us.”

Today’s high will reach 88 degrees, with winds out of the south at 10 to 20 mph, gusting to 25 mph, she said.

As the clouds move in, so does the chance for showers and thunderstorms in the area, she said.

Schack said the chance for showers picks up after midnight, with the greatest chance between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday.

“We should see thunderstorms last through the early afternoon,” Schack said.

The National Weather Service puts the chance for showers and thunderstorms at 20 percent today, 30 percent tonight and 60 percent Wednesday.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 66 degrees, with southerly winds 10-15 mph. The high will reach 68 degrees in the morning, with the cold front switching the winds out of the north at 15 to 20 mph, pushing temperatures down through the afternoon into the 50s by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Schack said.

Temperatures will continue to fall to a low of 38 degrees by early Thursday morning. Thursday’s high will reach only 60 degrees, she said.
