Light showers possible around noon

Warm temperatures, high humidity and the chance of light showers are on tap today, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“The chance for a light shower would start about noon and last through the afternoon. We’re talking about very light rain, or heavy sprinkles, ” Schack said. “Breezy south winds will allow temperatures to soar back into the 80s.”

The National Weather Service had issued a flood warning overnight for the Kansas River, but cancelled it this morning. The river was at 16.5 feet about 7 a.m., Schack said. Flood stage is at 18.5 feet, she said. The river’s south bank was out of its banks and flooding into Burcham Park overnight.

“We are expecting that to recede later this afternoon,” Schack said.

The weather service said that flooding from heavy rainfall during the early morning hours on Sunday would continue to be a hazard today across parts of Jackson, Jefferson and northern Shawnee counties. High water might make some roads impassable in those counties and bridges might also be washed out, the weather service reported. (More about flooding north of Lawrence.)

At 10:30 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 76 degrees, the humidity was 79 percent and winds were from the south at 14 mph.

“We do have a very mild start,” Schack said.

Today’s high will climb to 88 degrees, with southerly winds 10 to 20 mph, she said. The National Weather Service is expecting some gusts up to 30 mph today, with a 20 percent chance of precipitation.

Overnight, the low will drop to 71 degrees by early Tuesday morning.

Tuesday’s high will reach 88 degrees under partly cloudy skies, she said. Then a cold front begins to move into the area.

The overnight low will drop to 65 degrees by early Wednesday morning.

“The front will come barreling through here on Wednesday, bringing a chance for some thunderstorms,” Schack said.

Temperatures will fall throughout the day on Wednesday to a low of 40 by Thursday morning, she said.
