Astros clinch
Houston ? The Houston Astros clinched the NL wild card on the final day of the regular season – just as they did last year.
Roy Oswalt (20-12) became the first pitcher since 2001-02 with consecutive 20-win seasons, throwing six innings and driving in a run in Houston’s 6-4 victory Sunday over the Chicago Cubs as the Astros completed a remarkable comeback from a miserable start. The Astros were 15-30 after a loss to the Cubs on May 24.
Greg Maddux (13-15) finished with a losing record for the first time since going 6-14 as a rookie for the Cubs in 1987.
Phillies 9, Nationals 3
Washington – Kenny Lofton hit a two-run double, and Philadelphia completed a three-game sweep, but still fell a game short of Houston.
Marlins 7, Braves 6, 10 inn.
Miami – Jeremy Hermida homered to force extra innings.
Cardinals 7, Reds 5
St. Louis – Reggie Sanders rapped a home run.
Padres 3, Dodgers 1
San Diego – Adam Eaton (11-5) was brilliant in his final playoff tuneup.
Giants 3, Diamondbacks 1
San Francisco – Brett Tomko (8-15) pitched a six-hitter.
Rockies 11, Mets 3
New York – Mike Piazza was hitless in what likely was his final home game at Shea Stadium.
Pirates 3, Brewers 1
Pittsburgh – The Brewers finished with their first non-losing season since going 92-70 in 1992.
