A number of Kansas Republicans reportedly were considering bids for the party’s nomination for governor in 1982. They were encouraged partly by the party’s resurgence in 1980 and partly by the perception that Democrat Gov. John Carlin had become vulnerable after two years in office. Carlin’s divorce, appointment problems and the loss of several state staff members were pointed to as symbolic of his “problems.”
