Collegium Musicum announces concert

Kansas University’s Collegium Musicum will present its annual seasonal concert, titled “Early Music for the Holidays,” on

Dec. 8.

KU professor Paul Laird directs the Instrumental Collegium Musicum. The Vocal Collegium Musicum, an ensemble of 16 singers, is directed by Beth Wagstrom, a graduate teaching assistant and doctoral candidate in choral conducting.

The concert will include Latin motets by such Renaissance composers as Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Giovanni Gabrieli and Tomás Luis de Victoria; a set of medieval pieces, including dances and one movement from an early Mass by Guillaume de Machaut; Hebrew works, including Sephardic songs and a psalm setting by Salamone Rossi, a Jewish composer who lived in Mantua, Italy, around 1600; early carols; and a set of Baroque music.

The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Bales Organ Recital Hall.
