Kansas University released drawings of the planned $2.7 million Sabatini Multicultural Resource Center that will stand next to the Kansas Union along Jayhawk Boulevard.

Groundbreaking is set for this spring and the building is expected to be completed by spring 2007.

The new facility will double the amount of space available to the Multicultural Resource Center, now housed in a renovated military annex building near Summerfield Hall.

Steve Clark of Gould Evans Associates, which designed the building, said it would have a lot of open spaces and natural light, and it was designed to allow its inhabitants to express themselves easily.

“They can come in and fill it in, in a way that suits their purpose,” he said.

The main corridor has views of the campanile.

The project is supported by the Sabatini Family Foundation. The family includes Frank C. Sabatini, who graduated from KU’s business school in 1955 and its law school in 1957. A former state representative and member of the Kansas Board of Regents, he is chairman emeritus of Capital City Bank in Topeka, where he lives with his wife, Judith Sabatini.

They have four sons, including Michael and Dan, who both have degrees in architecture from KU.
