Nuggets’ ‘Melo out

Denver's Anthony sprains ankle in 101-92 loss

? Vince Carter scored 25 points, and Richard Jefferson had 24 as the New Jersey Nets cruised to a 101-92 victory over the short-handed Denver Nuggets, who added star Carmelo Anthony to their ever-growing list of injuries.

Kenyon Martin scored 26 points against his former team before being ejected with 65 seconds left.

Anthony sprained his left ankle just 1:09 into the game, and the Nets built a 55-40 halftime lead, then held off the scrappy, injury-riddled Nuggets on their way to their second straight road victory that evened their season record at 7-7.

Anthony drew a foul while driving to the basket and falling hard to the floor. He stayed down for a minute, then hobbled off the court during a timeout. He returned and sank both free throws before going to the trainers’ room. X-rays were negative.

Without Anthony, averaging 21.6 points and six rebounds in 14 games, the Nuggets fell apart before fighting back in the second half.

The Nuggets, who also got 24 points from Earl Boykins, have been hampered by injuries more so than any other NBA team this season.

Toronto – With two seconds left on the clock, Marquis Daniels inbounded to Terry, who ran into the lane and tossed a light shot over the arms of Chris Bosh as time expired.

Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony grimaces as he grabs his left ankle after spraining it on a drive to the basket early in the first quarter against the New Jersey Nets. Anthony left the game briefly and came back for one play before leaving for good Monday in Denver.

Terry had 26 points for the Mavericks in their first game without the injured Josh Howard, who sprained his right ankle Saturday against Memphis.

Dirk Nowitzki had 29 points. Bosh had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead league-worst Toronto, which lost its fifth straight.

Alonzo Mourning tied a franchise record with nine blocks, matching the mark he achieved five previous times.

Stephon Marbury scored 19 points to lead the Knicks, who have lost four of their last six.

The Heat took the lead for good after Wade’s basket put them ahead 10-8 with 8:24 remaining in the first quarter.

Magic 87, Celtics 83

Boston – Jameer Nelson scored nine of his 16 points in the final 9:52 of the fourth quarter, and Dwight Howard blocked Mark Blount’s potential game-tying shot with 12 seconds left.

Orlando led, 83-81, when Blount took a pass in the lane, but Howard got a piece of it before the shot could be released.

Steve Francis led the Magic with 19 points, and DeShawn Stevenson had 11. Howard had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Ricky Davis led the Celtics with 22 points, and Paul Pierce had 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Warriors 99, Hornets 83

Oakland, Calif. – Baron Davis had 17 points and nine assists in his first game against his former team, and the Warriors won their third straight.

Davis, acquired in a deal at the trading deadline last Feb. 24, still has a home in New Orleans that was damaged in Hurricane Katrina and pledged $500 toward the disaster relief effort for each point he scored in this game.

The Warriors foundation will match his $8,500 donation.
